Will changing from cedar shingles to vinyl siding on my house devalue it?

We have cedar shingles all over the outside of our house. The house is in Massachusetts and was built in the 1860s. I wanted to replace three sides of the shingles with vinyl siding that looks like the old fashioned painted clapboard. The reason for doing this is that vinyl is maintenance free and will last forever. We would only put cedar shingles on the front of the house. Before doing this, I wanted to know if it would bring the value of the house down. Anyone have any information on this? Please. I appreciate all suggestions.
It will actually increase it in value, and cut down your homeowners insurance immensley.Cedar shakes catch fire very rapidly, and burn very hot..Houses now days with cedar shakes siding or roofs have to pay A very outrageous insurance cost. Alot of perspective buyers also know this, so at any point you may want to sell it,the price would bring less with cedar shake siding.
Hi
In Idaho the cedar shingles are a big fire hazard. I’m gonna replace mine next year. The value on cedar shingles actually is taking away from the house…remember that is here in Idaho.
Good luck

PROVIDED IT IS A QUALITY VINYL , IT WILL BE WARMER AND SAFER AND LESS EXPENSIVE IN THE END
Putting vinyl siding on all 4 sides will increase the value, doing only 3 sides will decrease the value, because it will look odd to most people. If you can afford it replace the cedar shingles and let them age naturally. In the 1860’s houses were red, white, or natural look.
To me as a carpenter replacing cedar shingles with vinyl makes me feel sick for two reasons, the cedar is a quality material and vinyl cladding is low end product IMO, but I do understand the concerns of those who have posted.
I’d rather aluminium siding than vinyl and this to me would not be much better, especially for a house in Massachusetts of 150 years, if you have the funds I strongly suggest you look at something like this, http://www.cemplank.com/performance.shtml which would increase market value of your home compared with vinyl.
P.S.These types of sidings also come in profiles that look like shingle which will make it seem period.
