When replacing aluminum siding with vinyl siding is the old siding removed first?

I plan to replace the aluminum siding on my house and replace it with vinyl siding. I am wondering if the old siding is removed and new foam insulating sheets are placed prior to the vinyl… Is it difficult to remove the aluminum siding?
yes.
Yes, the old siding needs to be removed.
As to the value of replacing styrofoam sheathing underneath, that’s a toss-up. If you are talking 1/4″ or 3/8″ fan-fold insulation, I personally think it’s a waste of $$ & only serves to warm the installer’s pockets…there is virtually no R-value (insulating quality) to it.
On the other hand, if the insulation is profile matched for your particular siding, then the only real quality it can lay claim to is providing backing support for the dimensional profile of the siding & maybe a modicum of better insulation than the previously mentioned fan-fold stuff.
The siding’s not too difficult to remove…it’s usually yanked off…if you want every nail removed, that’s time consuming & labor intensive.
Good luck…
Yes, the existing siding must be removed first.
Then, the foam, if you need it, it really does not add that much insulation value to the wall assembly; it is mainly used to provide a flat surface when installing siding directly over wood siding., After the insulation, the starter strip, corner trims, and J-Channels are installed. Then the siding.
Be sure to build out your electrical boxes at lights and receptacles to be flush with the siding trim boxes, the trim is combustible, and the NEC requires that the box or box extension be flush with, or protrude past any combustible finish surfaces ()whether they are inside or outside of your house). Also, be sure to maintain a good ground path between the light fixtures and receptacles and the equipment grounding conductor of your wiring system.
Finally, remember that vinyl siding “moves” a lot as the temperature changes, so never nail it tightly against the house sheathing; and NEVER use anything but hand nails to install the siding and trim.
Yes Mam…………And stack the aluminum in a niece pile and haul it to the re- cycle center and you should get about 75 cents a pound for it, so if you have 1000 # when your done stripping, that means you have 750 dollars worth of profit………towards xmas:) Have fun stripping…don’t drop any. Ho Ho Ho. merry xmas
yes, remove the old siding. It’s really not hard to get off plus you can turn it in for cash as long as it is aluminum. The price is quite good now for it. That will help you out quite a bit towards your new foam sheeting that you put up first. Call any recycling place to find out how they take the aluminum.
