    The trick is to wire brush the cedar, to get to something solid for the paint to hold on to. Then start with a good alkyd modified latex primer. You might have to call around to find one. Most paint stores will either claim that it doesn’t exist, or that they’ve got something just as good, but really, for priming exterior wood siding, there’s nothing better than alkyd modified latex primer. Then top coat with the best exterior latex paint from the same paint store. If the primer is tinted to match the finish, then you out to be able to get by with just the two coats.
