As highly Touted as Thompson products are, that would not be the way to go. STAIN is far less an issue than Sealers, and there are hundreds of LOG home sites, that will be happy to offer the info you seek.
Certainly you might want over RAW/ WELL cured Logs, something that penetrates, much like TUNG oil would as well as eventually sealing the surface after multiple coats.
Obviously part of the issue is the Species of LOG, and your desire in a stain color. REDwood is popular even as a stain, but Dark Oak might be your choice?
In any case you should probably plan on a Species most secure against the elements, and that once you start with staining and treating, it could be an annual process.
there is a company named Sikkens. They make the BEST sealers in the world…bar none….It is used as a system….apply part A 3 months later use part B and then C.
Sikkens products are used on the finest yachts for a reason….it last for a long time and doesn’t have to be stripped when its time to re coat
