Train Explosion

January 31, 2010 by

A tanker train carrying what we’ve been told was Ethanol derailed and exploded. UPDATE: The fire only burned for 2 or 3 days thanks to the careful work of our volunteer fire crews as opposed to the 5 or 6 that had been estimated. In the end no one was hurt and the only damage done to the surrounding areas was a little bit of melted house siding, and the park that was on the other side of the tracks was ruined at one end. About 1/5th of the town was evacuated that night as a precaution, but all returned safely to their homes within 48 hours. The rail compnay that owned the train and maintianed the tracks is not only paying for the clean-up but also is giving a small monetary consideration to the people who were displaced for the weekend. This has been a Merry Cranberry Production.

no one was hurt……things can be replaced…….and porn can be downloaded later…..not really that exciting a crash if your main concern was your internet connection…but each to their own…..

I know, they use this set of tracks for tons of hazardous material all the time and I can’t remember the last time something happened.

You know, for all the bad videos we see of train fires, rail transport is actually the safest way to transport hazmat. There are a extremely limited number of incidents like this. However, when they happen, there big!!

Is this the one that happened in New Brighton? What exactly caused it, the Norfolk Southern reports I read did not say. Eh well, no one was killed or hurt, at least ethanol is not explosive. It humbles me to know that this train, 64R, goes daily by my place without recreating this scene.

That’s amazing that it knocked out your internet that far away, but ours was still working fine 10 blocks away. I bet that’s why we saw crews out checking all the lines for a few days afterward though. Probably making sure that none of ours were knocked out too.

That train knocked out a major fiber optic com line that served internet to most of northeast ohio. My internet was out from about 9:00PM to 4:00PM the next day.
