Does vinyl siding cost less than hardiplank siding?

An appraiser told me my home’s siding is in bad shape so I’m trying to decide if I want vinyl siding or hardiplank siding but I can’t seem to find any good cost comparisons.

How do you install vinyl siding corner posts if the corner is higher than 1 post?

The corner posts come in 10 foot lengths. My corners are 14 feet. When you install just 1 piece your supposed to leave a 1/4″ gap at the top. How do you do it if you hav 2 peices? just put them together? or is there a special way?

Can you safely paint vinyl siding a shade darker than its original color?
