Should I remove the old wood siding (some of it is beginning to rot) before puting on the new vinyl siding?

I have had two contractors tell me to remove it and one tell me to leave it. They suggested we left it so that the house did not re-settle and cause the sheetrock seams to crack. Does this frequently happen when removing the old siding?

How much did you pay for you vinyl siding? My house is 1700sqft and just getting some ruff estimates?

I used a jig-saw with metal blade. Not real successful.
I used a saws-all with metal blade. Much less successful.
I used tin snips. That was a desaster.
