Buying Advice For Metal Shelving Units

Metal shelving units are an inexpensive alternative when you are in need of storage area. The truth that they are built of steel and hence far more durable than their wooden counterparts is complemented by the fact that these products are also a great deal less pricey. The major trouble that wood faces in terms of durability is its aging properties. As wood tends to absorb moisture from the air it can cause them to either expand or contract. These metal shelving units are produced out of heavy duty steel and utilized in industries where a lot of impact tolerance is required. You can also make use of plywood or particle board to act as shelves inside the metal shelving units, painting them to match the color of the unit.

Metal Stamping is the process of cutting and forming metal alloys into specific forms especially for use as components for large machinery or structures. Metal sheets can be molded into different pre-defined forms for use as food as regular pots and jars. The most common alloys used in metal stamping steel zinc nickel aluminum and titanium. Stampings is a very effective and productive means of production of many types of metal on a large scale.

In stamping metal sheets are placed in a matrix or a press tool which is specially designed cavity that gives the preferred form of sheet metal. Upper part of the matrix is connected to the press slide while the lower component connects to the press bed. Specific component known as the blow pushes the sheet metal through the die thus performing the actual development of the operation. After pressing metal coated with gold palladium nickel or tin to prevent corrosion.

Coverage also increases wear and solderable nature of the product. Sometimes leaves are also pre-coated before the stamping process and then purify the product from excess stamping oils and films. The product is then heat-treated to make it stronger because it is still in soft condition after stamping. The product is then subjected to the process of deburring to remove sharp corners. This is done with chemicals or abrasives. Stampings also includes other processes such as metal-piercing cleaning shaping and drawing on the same machines.

Precision metal stamping is applicable to many industries like computers electronics electrical dental aerospace instrumentation military specs defense telecom and automotives. There are many methods in precision metal stamping for producing stamped prototypes. Blank creation is one such method. Blank creation involves the creation of a flat state of the component. The flat blank sheet is then used to make the parts features. In blank creation there are many processes like nibbling chemical etching water jet cutting wire EDM punch and die.

Stamping presses have specific strength speed and accuracy to give a definite form to the metal. There are two types of metal stamping presses: mechanical and hydraulic. They are available in a wide range of power size stroke length and operating speed.

Stampings are gradually replacing other metal forming processes like casting forging fabrication and processing. One reason for this is the very low cost of metal stamping. Dies for stamping cost less than those used in the forging and casting. In addition the metals used in metal stamping can be harder than those used in other processes resulting in a final product stronger. The cost of secondary processes like cleaning and plating is also significantly reduced.

The addition of these presses helps to expand xlnb’s capacity. They will be used for small complex and progressive stampings, secondary and compound stampings, as well as value added tube operations.

xlnb has been a leader in the precision stamping industry for over 25 years, and services the medical, automotive, commercial hardware, electronics, and aerospace industries, among others. By incorporating a vast variety of capabilities, xlnb a one-stop shop for a custom manufactured job.

xlnb’s precision metal stamping capabilities include progressive stamping power up to 300-tons and coining up to 600-tons. xlnb has bed sizes up to 108″ in length, and has the ability to stamp material from .001″ thin, up to .50″ thick, and can progressively stamp 300 parts a minute when applicable.

The two largest presses at xlnb are the 300-ton Minster press and 200-ton Bliss press, utilized to perform heavy-gauge stamping operations. Large steel surgical device components, commercial hardware parts, and even train doors are made with ease at xlnb.

At the end of last year, xlnb added four brand new United 28-ton OBI presses to perform secondary stampings and tube operations. xlnb now has 10 presses in the 28-ton to 45-ton range, extending its capability to manufacture almost any complex stamping or tubular component.

In addition there are certain foods that should be done only through a metal stamping: Base weights brackets balance clamps brake flanges conveyer flights bushing seats engine bases flywheel shrouds and friction plates. There are also various types of stamping including: Deep drawn stamping electronic stamping embossing Fourslide medical stamping embossing and short-term progressive stamping. The most commonly used type is a progressive drawing Die where the sheet metal passes through a series of stamps and stamping dies made all at once thereby significantly reducing the time it takes.

Smelting basics
Smelting involves more than just “melting the metal out of its ore”. Most ores are a chemical compound of the metal with other elements, such as oxygen (as an oxide) or sulfur (as a sulfide). To produce the metal, these compounds have to undergo a chemical reaction with a source of carbon, usually in a wood- or coal-burning furnace. Smelting therefore consists of using suitable reducing substances that will combine with those oxidizing elements to free the metal. Most ores are not pure, so that a flux (such as lime) must be added to react with the impurities and carry them off in a slag.
Historically, the first smelting processes used carbon (in the form of charcoal) to reduce the oxides of tin (cassiterite, SnO2), copper (cuprite, CuO) and lead (Lead(II) oxide, PbO), and eventually iron (hematite, Fe2O3) according to the overall reactions:
2 SnO2 + 2 C 2 Sn + 2 CO2
2 PbO + C 2 Pb + CO2
2 CuO + C 2 Cu + CO2
2 Fe2O3 + 3 C 4 Fe + 3 CO2
In all these reactions the reducing agent was actually carbon monoxide, as the charcoal and oxides remained solid and therefore could not react directly with each other. The list above is sorted in increasing order of the temperature required for the process. It is not surprising that humans mastered the production of copper, tin, and lead several millennia before they were able to smelt iron.
The reduction may even occur at a temperature below the metal’s melting point. This procedure is used in iron bloomeries, and produces a spongy mass of metal that must be processed to become a compact metal.
For tin, the primary ore was indeed the oxide SnO2 (cassiterite). For copper and lead, the primary ores were actually the sulfides, chalcocite (CuS2) and galena (PbS); these first had to be converted to oxides by roasting them in air, through the overall reactions:
2 CuS2 + 5 O2 2 CuO + 4 SO2
2 PbS + 3 O2 2 PbO + 2 SO2
Silver was generally found in the form of sulfides mixed with galena; it was smelted together with lead and was afterwards separated from it by cupellation.
Mercury is an exception, as mercury oxide decomposes at about 500 C (932 F). The main sulfide ore (cinnabar, HgS) was roasted to produce the oxide HgO, which decomposed at about 500 C (932 F) into oxygen and mercury. Since the metal boils at 357 C (675 F), it left the furnace as a (highly toxic) vapor, that was condensed in appropriate containers. History

In the Old World, humans learned to smelt metals still in the prehistory, more than 8000 years ago. The discovery of the “useful” metals copper and bronze at first, then iron a few millennia later had an enormous impact on human society. The impact was so pervasive that scholars traditionally divide ancient history into Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age.
In the Americas, the Incas and other civilizations of the Andes had mastered the smelting of copper and bronze when the first Europeans arrived in the 16th century.[citation needed] Tin and lead
In the Old World, the first metals smelted were tin and lead. The earliest known cast lead beads were found in the atal Hyk site in Anatolia (Turkey), and dated from about 6500 BC, but the metal may have been known ealier.
Since the discovery happened several millennia before the invention of writing, we have no evidence about how it was made. However, tin and lead can be smelted by placing the ores in a wood fire, so it is possible that the discovery may have occurred by accident.
Although lead is a relatively common metal, its discovery had relatively little impact in the ancient world. It is too soft to be used for weapons (except possibly as sling projectiles) or for structural elements. However, being easy to cast and shape, it came to be extensively used in the classical world of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome for piping and storage of water. It was also used as a mortar in stone buildings, and as a writing material for commemorative plaques and curses.
Tin was much less common than lead and was only marginally harder, and had even less impact by itself. Copper and bronze
After tin and lead, the next metal to be smelted appears to have been copper. How the discovery came about is a matter of much debate. Campfires are about 200 C short of the temperature needed for that,[citation needed] so it has been conjectured that the first smelting of copper may have been achieved in pottery kilns. The earliest known instances in Europe and the Near East were found in Persia, dated about 6000 BC.[citation needed] The first known cast copper artifact is a mace head found in Can Hasan, Turkey and dated from 6000 to 5000 BC. The development of copper smelting in the Andes, which is believed to have been an independent of the old world, may have occurred in the same way.[citation needed].
By combining copper with tin and/or arsenic in the right proportions one obtains bronze, an alloy which is significantly harder than copper. The first copper/arsenic bronzes date of 4200 BC from Asia Minor. The Inca bronze alloys were also of this type. Arsenic is often an impurity in copper ores, so the discovery could have been made by accident; but eventually arsenic-bearing minerals were intentionally added during smelting.[citation needed]
Copper/tin bronzes, harder and more durable, were developed around 1500 BC or 3200 BC,also in Asia Minor.[citation needed]
The discovery of copper smelting and bronze manufacture had a significant impact on the history of the Old World. The metal was hard enough to make weapons, which were heavier, stronger, and more resistant to impact-related damage than their wood, bone, or stone equivalents. For several millennia, bronze was the material of choice for weapons such as swords, daggers, battle axes, spear and arrow points, as well as protective gear such as shields, helmets, shin guards, and other body armor. Bronze also supplanted stone, wood and organic materials in all sorts of tools and household utensils, such as chisels, saws, adzes, nails, blade shears, knives, sewing needles and pins, jugs, cooking pots and cauldrons, mirrors, horse harnesses, and much more.[citation needed] In turn, bronze tools brought about an increase in the quantity, quality, and complexity of manufactured products, from buildings to leather goods.[citation needed] Tin and copper also contributed to the establishment of trade networks spanning large areas of Europe and Asia, and had a major effect on the distribution of wealth among individuals and nations.[citation needed]

The process through which the smiths learned to produce copper/tin bronzes is once again a mystery. The first such bronzes were probably a lucky accident from tin contamination of copper ores, but by 2000 BC we know that tin was being mined on purpose for the production of bronze. This is amazing, given that tin is a semi-rare metal, and even a rich cassiterite ore only has 5% tin. Also it takes special skills (or special instruments) to find it and locate the richer lodes. But, whatever steps were taken to learn about tin, these were fully understood by 2000 BC. Iron smelting

The earliest evidence to date for the bloomery smelting of iron is found at Tell Hammeh, Jordan (see also external link), and dates to 930 BC (C14 dating). However, based on the archaeological record of iron artifacts, it is clear that intentional reduction of iron metal from terrestrial ores (in the case of Hammeh a Haematite ore), must have started near the end of the Late Bronze Age (ca. 16001150 BC). Where and how iron smelting was discovered is widely debated, and remains uncertain due to the significant lack of production finds. Nevertheless, there is some consensus[citation needed] that iron technology originated in the Near East, perhaps in Eastern Anatolia.
In Ancient Egypt, somewhere between the Third Intermediate Period and 23rd Dynasty (ca. 1100750 BC), there are indications of iron working. Significantly though, no evidence for the smelting of iron from ore has been attested to Egypt in any period. There is a further possibility of iron smelting and working in West Africa by 1200 BC. In addition, very early instances of carbon steel were found to be in production around 2000 years before the present in northwest Tanzania, based on complex preheating principles. These discoveries are significant for the history of metallurgy.
Most early processes in Europe and Africa involved smelting iron ore in a bloomery, where the temperature is kept low enough so that the iron does not melt. This produces a spongy mass of iron called a bloom, which then has to be consolidated with a hammer. Later iron smelting

From the medieval period, the process of direct reduction in bloomeries began to be replaced by an indirect process. In this, a blast furnace was used to make pig iron, which then had to undergo a further process to make forgeable bar iron. Processes for the second stage include fining in a finery forge and, from the Industrial Revolution, puddling. However both processes are now obsolete, and wrought iron is now hardly made. Instead, mild steel is produced from a bessemer converter or by other means. Base metals

The ores of base metals are often sulfides. In recent centuries, reverberatory smelters (sometimes called cupolas) have been used. These keep the fuel and the charge being smelted separate. Traditionally these were used for carrying out the first step: formation of two liquids, one an oxide slag containing most of the impurity elements, and the other a sulfide matte containing the valuable metal sulfide and some impurities. Such “reverb” furnaces are today about 40 m long, 3 m high and 10 m wide. Fuel is burned at one end and the heat melts the dry sulfide concentrates (usually after partial roasting), which is fed through the openings in the roof of the furnace. The slag floats on top of the heavier matte, and is removed and discarded or recycled. The sulfide matte is then sent to the converter. Introduction

Sheet Metal Parts industry consists of those companies which are engaged in manufacturing sheet metal works for a diverse range of products from large scale e.g. buildings to smaller ones like stove-pipes etc.

For the outsiders, sheet metal is simply a metal, formed into thin and flat pieces. Everyday, countless objects are constructed out this material. It can be cut and bent into a variety of different shapes and is one of the fundamental forms used in metalworking. Thickness of such products (also known as gauge) can vary significantly as per the requirement.

There are many different metals that can be made into sheet metal, such as aluminium, brass, copper, steel, tin, nickel and titanium. Important sheet metals like silver, gold, and platinum are used for decorative purposes.

Application

As discussed above sheet metal has diverse usage.It is used in car bodies, airplane wings, medical tables, roofs for building and many other things. Sheet metal of iron and other materials with high magnetic permeability has applications in transformers and electric machines.

Common Materials used are

Stainless steel : It is commonly used for pumps, valves, chemical equipment, marine applications as well as in cutlery.

Aluminium : It is commonly used in chemical processing equipment, light reflectors, jewelry, tampings, spun and drawn parts, mail boxes, cabinets, tanks, fan blades, pressure vessels etc.

The Formation Process

The formation process of a sheet metal is quite complex and complicated. It includes special techniques like deep drawing, cutting, punching, perforating, spinning, press brake forming, roll forming, rolling, bending sheet metal with rollers, stamping, bending etc.

The late 90s scenario for sheet metal parts exporters

As per an industry report , throughout the late 1990s, the sheet metal industry experienced steady and uninterrupted growth. The value of shipments (in US) jumped from $15.5 billion in 1997 to $19.3 billion in 2000. In the same period, total industry employment (in US) rose from 127,791 workers to 142,682 workers.

The R Factor

Recession had mixed effect on the steady growth of this industry. When the economy weakened in 2000, the demand from big players started decreasing, however, the falling interest rates gave a boost to the construction of new home and building , which in turn increased demand for many sheet metal work products for roofing and siding.

Research and Technology

In today’s fast changing scenario, research and technology (R&D) plays an important role in the growth of any industry and same has been the case with the sheet metal parts industry . Technological advances in the sheet metal work industry in 1990s revolutionized the efficiency and precision with which sheet metal products were made. The initial focus was on improving tools, dies etc. and gradually included the use of computers and internet for marketing and promotion purposes.

Today, sheet metal parts exporters have the best technology at their disposal to make the best yet cost effective equipments and use the internet’s unlimited potential to reach out to a new set of buyers without incurring huge investments. As the other industries have started picking up the growth it is expected that the sheet metal exporters will further consolidate their position in the market and reap higher profits.

Metal Building Kits – Sustainability from the Start

Metal buildings and metal building kits have offered their owners many benefits over the last fifty years or so.  Steel and metal buildings came into domestic use after World War II and the growth of their popularity for flexible, affordable structures has been steady and continuous.

Back then sustainability was a foreign word to most people.  Yet these buildings were (and still are) one of the most sustainable types of structures that one could build.  It almost makes you think that these structures were ahead of their time.

The extremely economical use of resources in these buildings makes them environmentally friendly as well as cost efficient.  Today’s engineered building systems make use of a technique that “economizes” each structure.

By controlling the amount of steel in any building, be it a warehouse, manufacturing plant airplane hangar, barn or church, the costs are kept to a minimum.  This is because most metal building kits are priced by the amount (or weight) of steel in the structure.  The more steel – the more cost.

Because about 90 percent of the metal building manufacturers sell their products through a network of contractors, the local needs and concerns are addressed.  These contractors are extremely familiar with the metal building product that they sell and are extremely efficient in the erection process – another cost saving for the consumer.

When deciding on a metal building for a specific use, the contractor, salesman and/or in-plant engineer identifies all issues that may affect the design.  These might include atmospheric conditions (snow and wind loads, hurricane or seismic loads) crane loads, mezzanine loads, roof-top equipment loads – basically anything that the building would have to support.

The building is then designed for those loads and ONLY those loads.  There is no excessive steel in the building, keeping the cost of the metal building kit down as well as minimizing the affect on the resources pool.

Should one of these buildings become redundant and require demolition, the structures are virtually all recyclable.

Over the years of course technology has taken huge steps forward.  When metal buildings first hit the marketplace they were virtually all Quonset style buildings or metal boxes.

Today however these building kits can be dressed-up considerably.  A Robertson Metal Building Systems contractor has built an amusement park building that resembles the Titanic complete with its own iceberg.

You may drive down the street or highway and not even notice that the buildings you are looking at are in fact metal building kits.  With so many cladding options today prefab metal building kits are indiscernible from any other building method. 

Today’s technology has provided metal building manufacturers the ability to provide extremely energy-efficient buildings.  In fact, many manufacturers have green or LEED experts on staff or available to assist in achieving these highly sought after sustainable accolades.

Great looks, flexible designs, cost effective and sustainable – is it any wonder that prefab metal building kits will continue to gain in popularity as the building system of choice?

Everyone has taken the time to pass through a metal detector and known that feeling of safety associated with it. Whether at an airport or a high security prison, it can feel very safe and secure knowing that you are going into a safe building. Everyone feels safe after passing through a metal detector because they know that the only weapons on the other side of the detector are the weapons designed to protect them. It’s very simply put: metal detectors work and make people feel safe.

That added feeling of security is found throughout many of our day to day buildings we use in our lives. The feeling of knowing you are safe can be created in any airport, office building, college, condo, or other tightly confined area. Knowing that you are safe can be achieved by making an entrance available to those who enter the building. This way you can control who goes into the building and what they bring into it.

When considering purchasing a metal detector, there are a number of options to consider. The two different types of metal detectors are the “walk-through” and the “hand-held” models of metal detectors. Hand-held models are metal detectors that allow the owner or security guard to physically detect whether the person has any metallic items on them. The security agent will simply wave the hand-held detector around the person to locate the source of the metal object. Walk-through detectors offer a quick means of processing people. They alert security officers to potentially dangerous metal objects such as guns and knives. The advantage of this is to allow for people to pass through quickly and at the least inconvenience possible.

Wondering how metal detectors work? There is an interesting explanation behind this effective and crime preventing item. Metal detectors use electromagnetic induction to detect objects that are considered metallic. Inside of the metal detector is a tool that when induced by a metallic current, it creates a magnetic field. When the metallic field comes in contact with a gun or a knife, the device is sounded to the presence of the metal.

Still not sure which metal detector is right for your needs? Consider the advantages of both models. Hand-held detectors are more affordable than a walk-through detector. The hand-held model identifies exactly where the metal is located on a person’s body. Whereas the walk-through models only identify that the person has a metal object on them. Ideally, the best option for the ultimate in security and piece of mind is having both items present. This way you will maximize the coverage and find the criminals’ weapons in no time.

Stop taking chances and consider the metal detector as a method of deterrence for would-be criminals. Any security expert will tell you that having a metal detector is the ultimate way to put fear into the hearts and minds of criminals. People will think twice when they realize they have to pass through a metal detector in order to gain entrance. Consider making your building or checkpoint safer. Consider buying a metal detector today.

I am sure you have seen metal saws sometime in your lifetime. I will share with you the construction saws-what is a metal saw. Metal saws are tools that cut several types of metals, but each metal saw can only cut one or two metals. I talk about four different types of metal saws in this report so that you can get a better understanding of what they are.

You have to ask what is a metal saw, and why is it used in construction. Construction metal saws are used to cut metals used in constructing a building. However in the residential world they are used rarely. There are at least five metal saws that cut different metals. So choosing the proper saw for the right metal is imperative. Always use the proper saw to cut the metal it is designed to cut.

Let us now discover the hack saw. This metal saw has a large round blade is capable of cutting small solid and hollow pipe. These pipes are used to place electrical wiring in so that they are protected. Hack saws also cut something called threaded metal rods. The threading is similar to those that surround normal screws. The rods are used to hold up plumbing pipes that are hung from the ceilings in some buildings.

Now let us learn about the chop saw. This unique metal saw will cut solid piping. It is the kind of saw you can hold in your hand. Mainly it is used to cut a pipe called rebar. The Rebar pipe is used to make the inside of a concrete structure strong. Along with this saw you will receive 3 different blades. The blades go up in size to cut the larger materials. You have your choice of a ten inch, 12 and 14 inch blades. This is like three tools in one because the blades get progressively larger.

The band saw one of the best metal saws that you can own. This saw is unique in that it has a long, straight blade that goes up and down to make the cuts. It is made to cut two or more metals. It actually made to cut I beams. The I beam is cut and installed, the main purpose of an I beam is it holds metal frames together at the top or roof. It also cuts large pipes evenly and straight. This allows the welder to weld two pieces of piping together. This pipe is called electrical power plates.

Last but not least is the aluminum chop saw. This metal saw is used for cutting the gutter around the top of your home to catch water. This saw is also used to chop rails to the right size for creating screened in rooms. This saw will only cut aluminum and no other type of metal. For the most part, this tool is used on construction sites.

Let me sum this up by saying you now know the answer to the question what is a metal saws. The great thing about these is the fact that they can cut very large, solid round pipe. Fortunately there are several different saws to cut several different types of metal. Remember the metal that you are working with also has a special saw to cut it. It is best to do more research on this topic using the internet or library.
