If your house is 50 years old. Some of Its cedar shakes are dirty and have holes (becayse of the birds)Would you like to reprint it or put a new vinyl instead ? The quality of the material is the main concern.

cedar siding. But when getting an estimate aren’t they supposed to ask? or check it? The guy who gave me the estimate told me that you can put siding on top of the cedar siding which i think might be rotten underneath. is this one way for them to just do that job and get their money and let the whole thing rot and fall off?

Will changing from cedar shingles to vinyl siding on my house devalue it?

We have cedar shingles all over the outside of our house. The house is in Massachusetts and was built in the 1860s. I wanted to replace three sides of the shingles with vinyl siding that looks like the old fashioned painted clapboard. The reason for doing this is that vinyl is maintenance free and will last forever. We would only put cedar shingles on the front of the house. Before doing this, I wanted to know if it would bring the value of the house down. Anyone have any information on this? Please. I appreciate all suggestions.

There is almost 2,000 square feet to cover on my house. I don’t know if it would be better for me to do vinyl siding or just replace the cedar shakes that I have on my house. Does anyone know how much it would cost for each one? I’m in Ohio.

Is cedar siding a good option for siding on my house?

I’ve gotten estimates for Hardieboard (cement fiber) and ABC seamless steel siding. They’re pretty expensive. My wife’s stepdad builds houses for a living, and he said to go with cedar. Is cedar a good option? We plan on living at the house for a long time.
I should add, my house is about 15 years old. I’ve been there almost 2 years. The siding on the house is falling off. I think it is glue and sawdust.

Cedar shake or fiber cement alternative?

Anyone out there have photos of fiber cement siding in a “shake” look installed or experience with both? We’re trying to determine whether to replace old cedar shake with fiber cement on three sides of the house. Will fiber cement be noticeably different looking? The house is a foursquare, built in 1902. The main brand we’re looking at is James Hardie.
