Imagine coming home after a hard day’s work knowing that your aches and pains will soon disappear, once you have jumped into your infrared log cabin (also known as an infrared sauna).

Unlike traditional saunas that need to warm up the air to a certain temperature before the body is heated, an infrared cabin only heats approximately 20% of the surrounding air, and the remaining 80% is converted to heat within the body. In addition, an infrared cabin does not use steam or humidity and consequently breathing is easier.

Infrared light is part of the sun’s invisible spectrum. It is a form of energy that is directly transmitted onto objects because of its specific wavelength. It has nothing to do with ultraviolet light, which causes sunburn and damage to the skin.

Infrared log cabins come in variety of sizes and they can be custom-built or chosen from a standard range. There are a variety of extras to choose from: CD player, colour light panel, aromatherapy dispenser, air purifier, ioniser, and a full spectrum light panel. Infrared log cabins do more then relax you – they can improve your health.

For thousands of years ancient cultures have understood that the action of sweating was an effective way to cleanse the body. The Finns are one of the main cultures that continue to maintain a focus on saunas as a primary method of encouraging sweating. Sweating is one of the body’s ways to eliminate toxins, such as metabolic by products from our own cells, and it plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy body. In today’s modern world characterized by our inactive lifestyle, the need for a ‘good sweat’ is very important if we want to look ourselves.

Medical researchers from across the world have found that regular use of an infrared log cabin can have enormous health benefits. In Japan, there is an ‘infrared society’ composed of medical doctors and physical therapists dedicated to further infrared research. Their findings support the health benefits of infrared therapy as a method of healing. In recent times, Japanese research studies have found treatment in an infrared cabin relieved burn pain and promoted the healing rate with less scarring, reduced hypertension (high blood pressure), improved short-term memory loss, relieved arthritis pain, and improved weight loss results. They also found that ear, nose and throat conditions were relieved: tinnitus (ringing in the ears), nosebleeds and chronic middle-ear infections.

Swedish researchers found joint-pain had been resolved when infrared therapy was used, and in Germany, physicians have used whole-body infrared therapy for over 80 years. Chinese research studies have reported over 90% success rate of ailments treated with infrared therapy, such as: chronic soft tissue injury, sciatica, infected eczema, post-surgical infections, and pelvic infection. Ailments associated with poor circulation can respond very well to sessions in an infrared log cabin, due to an increase in peripheral dilation (dilation of the capillaries), such as: leg ulcers, oedema, and fatigue. Skin problems can also be helped: dandruff, ketoids (raised scar tissue), acne, blackheads, and psoriasis.

There are contraindications to using an infrared log cabin, for example: if you’re using certain prescription drugs, because of possible changes in the drug’s effect due to an interaction with the infrared energy. As well as for people who have lupus or multiple sclerosis, recent joint injuries, surgical implements, and silicone implants.

Infrared therapy is reputed to offer an amazing range of possible therapeutic benefits in research conducted around the world. However, the information in this article is provided for reference purposes only. If you have any health problems/health concerns, be sure to consult your physician before you commence time in an infrared log cabin.

Corn-Cob Blasting-the best option for stripping log home and cabin finishes!

-Generally, corn cob blasting is the best overall method of dealing with many log related problems. Some other method’s for removal of failing finishes, sun-burned wood, mold and mildew issues, etc., are sand blasting or chemical stripping. Sand blasting is a method that is still commonly used, but this method is excessively damaging to the wood, blowing away too much good wood and profiling the logs! Chemical stripping requires the use of caustic chemical’s, and the EPA has made illegal the most effective ones because of how harmful they are to not only the environment, but also the people applying them and the people in the surrounding area. There are many log home and deck restoration companies that still rely heavily on chemical stripping. There are still certain times that we feel some of the milder chemical stripper’s are alright to use. Many of the log homes that we work on are in close proximity to lake and river system’s, making cob blasting the most feasible option of preparing the logs as the chemicals for stripping are obviously very harmful to our lakes and rivers.

-Cob blasting is similar to sand blasting in that you use a blasting pot, in combination with highly compressed air. Cob blasting machines use the compressed air together with the ground up corn cob. The corn cob is light, and work’s very effectively to strip the wood. The air pressure and the amount of media (corn cob) can be adjusted very precisely to only remove as much of the log as is necessary to remove the failing finish, bad wood, etc. Corn cob that is used is bio-degradable, and actually work’s as a good mulch. With chemical stripping, the chemical is applied, then allowed a “dwell” time. The dwell time varies, depending on the finish to be removed, etc. Then a pressure washer is used to remove the chemicals. This is another reason that we prefer cob blasting. It is a dry process. With many of the restoration jobs we work on, there are not only problems with the finish, but the sealants are usually in bad shape too. Many times there are gaps in between the logs, and the caulk or chinking. When you chemical strip, and then pressure wash, many times you would be blasting high pressure water into the home, and in the interior of many log homes today, there is drywall walls, etc. And that can get messy. Cob blasting is a dry process, and worst case scenario, the inside of the house gets a little dust and cob in it. Much easier to clean and less destructive than water. With chemical stripping, most strippers that are effective then need a neutralizer applied after the stripper. Then the neutralizer also needs to be pressure washed off. The fact of the matter is, there are some stains out there, usually the hard shell type stains, (Sikkens, etc.) that even the best legal chemical strippers made cannot effectively remove these finishes!

- Cob blasting is the best way to prepare a log surface for stain, because it opens the surface grain. This makes it more porous, so the log will take and retain up to 50% more stain than a non-cob blasted log. This means 50% more pigment protection and U.V. protection for your logs, and this of course means not only properly prepared wood, but a longer lasting stain job!

- Since cob blasting is a dry process, the log home can then be immediately stained without waiting for the drying process, as you would have to with chemical stripping. Preferably, the logs should be treated with a Liquid borate to make sure nothing grows under the new stain, and allowed to dry out before the re-staining is done, though!

- These are just some of the reasons why we feel cob blasting is the preferred method. We are committed to best processes, and those that are healthy for our environment!

Do you want to work from home but there isn’t any space? Are you working from home but family members and friends distract you? Do you need more space for your office, but an extension is too expensive and time consuming?

A Log cabin, as a home office could provide a quick and easy solution to your problems, and are gaining in popularity. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, look attractive and can be built in less than a week. Being located in a beautifully designed log cabin could enhance your company, be developed as part of your company’s branding and become a valuable business asset.

A one-room log cabin in a square or rectangular design is the most prevalent shape for an office, although you could have an L shape, a hexagon shape or have one designed to your exact specifications. The size of the log cabin is often dictated by the available space in your garden. The smallest size for a log cabin office is generally 8’ x 10’ and the most popular sizes are 12’ x 8’ and 12’ x 10’. Ideally you should have a clear space of least 18” wide on all sides to ensure easy access for installation and future maintenance. Log cabins are easy to maintain once they are erected. To help prolong the life of your log cabin, once a year the external timber should be treated with a quality wood stain and the windows and door hinges should be oiled regularly.

If you regularly have customers visiting your office, a loft-designed log cabin may be your choice. The upstairs area could be your working area and the downstairs used as a meet and greet area; furnished with comfortable sofas and chairs, coffee table and a tea-and-coffee making area. Customers will not want to leave!

The log cabin used as an office, should contain sufficient desk and file storage space and be at the correct temperature so it can be used all-year-round. A thermostatic heater, double-glazing, insulated walls, floor and ceiling, can help maintain a comfortable working temperature in the winter. In the summer, with the doors and windows open you can create a refreshing atmosphere to work in. If you choose a log cabin with a veranda, not only will it enhance the look of your office, but you’ll also have the choice of working outside while enjoying the fresh air. You’ll be the envy of everyone who has to work in a stuffy office!

Log cabins can be built from scratch or by assembling a DIY kit. DIY kits only need a basic selection of tools, such as: a hammer, screwdriver, power drill, spirit level, an adjustable spanner, a knife, stepladder and safety goggles. This could be an interesting project for any DIY fan. However, if the thought of assembling your own log cabin fills you with fear, don’t worry. There are companies that specialise in designing and constructing log cabins specifically for offices. They understand the needs of a log cabin when it is used as a home office and will work with you from the planning stage, right through to the finished construction. They will ensure there is enough power and telecom points fitted for all your electrical equipment, plenty of room for shelves and cupboards to hold your stock and accessories and adequate lighting so you don’t strain your eyes while you’re working. The log cabin is then fitted with a secure locking system to keep your business safe.

So, don’t just dream about having a home office; a log cabin could be the answer.

Log cabins set in the middle of a green open space under an open, blue sky – looks like the very picture of beauty, doesn’t it? Picture postcard perfect beauty. Log cabins have a certain rustic charm about them, which is an undeniable fact, and they’ve been around for a long time. They have the simplest of structures and can be found all over the world, both in rural and urban areas wherever wood has been readily available. It is believed that log cabins began to be constructed initially in the northern part of Europe, around 3500 BC. Later on, the construction of such cabins began in the USA, Germany, Russia and Scandinavia. A number of the log cabins constructed years ago still stand in some parts of the world.

The styles in which log cabins have been constructed vary from one part of the world to another. Two common styles of log cabins, classified on the basis of the style of their roofs, are the purlin style and the gable style. In the middle of the 18th century, elaborate log cabins began to be constructed, known as the Adirondack style of cabins. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, a number of log cabins began to be constructed as a part of the United States Park Service, most of which were built as per the Adirondack style.

The construction of a log cabin is rather simple, as it is usually built with logs horizontally piled one on top of one another. Logs used for building a cabin can not be picked on a random basis. They need to be selected carefully as logs with only a few knots are preferred, as such logs can be smoothed easily with a bit of whittling. This ensures that the gaps between the logs are as small as possible. In days gone by the gaps were filled in with grass and sticks, known as ‘chinking’, or with mud, known as ‘daubing’.

Major decisions to be taken when constructing a log cabin are – the cabin size, number of storeys, the type of roof, and the type of doors and windows. Years ago the availability of logs as well as that of labour were two of the most important factors affecting the size of the cabin. For instance, if logs were not readily available in the vicinity of the site, the size of the cabin would have to be restricted. Similarly, if labour – human or animal – was not available near the site, again the cabin size would have to be restricted.

In today’s times however, the construction of log cabins has been made extremely simple by the availability of ready-to-erect log cabin kits. Such cabins have the same look and feel as traditional log cabins, but are cheaper and easier to construct. You do not have to look for the various materials for construction and collect them from different places, as they are readily available in a single kit. Moreover, when log cabin kits are being used, there is no need for cranes and other heavy equipment. Due to their advantages, log cabin kits are widely preferred by people all over the world.

Initially, log cabins were built by travelers to stay en route. They were not meant to be permanent dwellings. With the passage of time, they began to be used as residences, as well as outbuildings for various purposes such as storage of garden equipment and raising animals. Some people use log cabins as an extension of their home: as a gym; an office; as a playroom; or as a place for rest and relaxation.

In conclusion, log cabins have been around for a long time because they have always been versatile and remain an asset for any homeowner.

Do you want a second home but you think you can’t afford it? Think again, because a log cabin could be the answer.

Gone are the days when log cabins had dirt floors and no utilities. Today’s log cabins can be as comfortable as your own home; with insulated walls, tiled roof, full central heating, and double glazed windows.

A Log cabin as a second home can enable you to have a holiday in a favourite location at any time. They are becoming a popular choice because a log cabin tends to have a lower asking price than a traditional brick building of the same size, and low mortgage rates are still on the market. A log cabin as a second home can be bought used, brand new, or built as a DIY project, and there are companies that specialise in each of these areas.

If you’ve never experienced life in a log cabin, you could ‘test the water’ before buying, by renting a holiday log cabin. There are holiday log cabins within the United Kingdom or as far a field as Lapland.

When buying a new log cabin for a second home, you have the option of working with a design team to alter the floor plans to suit your individual requirements, and you can chose your own décor. They are often located in parks with other log cabins and they have the convenience of local amenities nearby such as: shops, a swimming pool, and a golf course. On top of your monthly mortgage, (if you need one) there is the monthly park fee to consider before you buy.

Building your own log cabin as a second home gives you the option to erect your log cabin wherever you want (subject to planning permission). However, suitable building sites in isolated parts of the country may be cheaper to buy, but they can be filled with added or hidden costs such as: sand, clay or rocky soils that may need additional engineering. There may be steep hills and mountains that can affect the transportation of necessary equipment, and extra utilities may need to be fitted, such as a septic tank, etc.

Before you take the plunge into buying a plot of land to build your own log cabin as a second home, do some research into your costs, so you know exactly what you can or cannot afford. There are also some questions you should ask: do you intend to retire to your log cabin one day? How often will you visit your log cabin? Will you rent it out to other people when you aren’t using it? Will you need to build guestrooms for visitors, or will you avoid having visitors stay overnight? Will you build the log cabin yourself or hire builders? How big do you want your log cabin? The bigger the log cabin the more maintenance work will be needed. Will you do your own maintenance work or hire somebody? What about security? Building your own log cabin as a second home can be rewarding, but do plan ahead.

If you want to escape the dreary British weather, there are plenty of log cabins as second homes in the sun to choose from. Using a solicitor is not a legal requirement in order to buy a property aboard in some countries, but it would give you peace of mind knowing that an expert has covered the legal side of your purchase.

A log cabin as a second home, whether in the United Kingdom or overseas, can be a wonderful addition to a family’s life and create many happy family memories for everyone to treasure.

Traditionally log cabins were found in wooded areas, where the construction material was at hand. In North America they were built by early settlers and by hunters, loggers, and other wilderness dwellers, and were associated by many people with simplicity and self reliance. Since the days of the early settlers in North America, women would make quilts that represented log cabins on the prairie. The red centre squares were for the hearth, the lighter squares were for the sunny side of the log cabin, and dark squares were on the opposite side for the shady side of the log cabin.

Log Cabin Uses

The heyday of the log cabin in North America was in the third and fourth quarters of the 19th Century, which corresponds to the widespread trek Westward after the Civil War. Nowadays log cabins are found all over the world and they are often used as an extension for the home when space is short, for example, as an office, playroom, sauna, a gym or a therapy room. Because log cabins are seen as strong, reliable and environmentally friendly, log cabins are often used in the branding for various companies and organisations.

Energy Efficient

Log cabins are renowned for their energy efficiency as timber is an excellent insulator – a 2.5cm log has a better thermal resistance than an 11.4cm brick, because the thousands of tiny air pockets trapped in every square inch of the wood’s structure slow the transfer of heat though the log. Therefore the log cabins are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. However, increasing the thickness of the walls does not mean you will have the most energy efficient log cabin, because you have to consider the insulation for the floors, ceilings and roof, and use the right kind of doors and windows, etc.

Choices

Log cabins are often bought directly from a supplier, and the choice is huge. However, if you’re looking for a truly unique log cabin, then building your own can be a great experience but remember it can also be challenging and physically demanding. To save yourself time and energy you could hire a contractor to build your log cabin home, but do check they are reliable, offer good value for money, and only use the best materials.

Check list

Whichever option you decide on, i.e. buying a ready-made log cabin or building your own, there are a several points to consider: Try to opt for toughen glass in your log cabin because plastic fades over time; Be careful of long delivery times. It is possible to do a credit check on the company selling you the cabin and there are websites that check a company’s financial status; Check what is included in the price, for example, delivery, veranda, and window boxes; Use a good preservative as a cheap one is a waste of time; Check where the wood comes from. Is it from a sustainable forest, and is it made from slow grown timber? Quick growing timber is cheaper but will eventually twist; Check on building regulations for your area. Planning permission isn’t normally needed for small cabins as long as it is 5 metres away from the main property, does not exceed more than 50% of your total garden area and is less than 4 metres in height. However, if you have any doubts or live in a conservation area or a listed building, you should contact your local planning office.

Conclusion

Log cabins have a long history and are as popular today as they were many years ago in North America. However, these day’s log cabins are not limited as a place to live, but rather as an extension to the home.

The log cabin is a versatile piece of kit – it can be used as an office, house a large whirlpool tub, provide a ‘granny’ annexe, a playroom for the children or even be used as a second home. The choice is endless. In America, the log cabin is often used as a primary home and can be bought and sold through estate agents. Most people believe the log cabin is native to America, however, some historians have said log cabins were originally from Sweden, brought to America by Swedish immigrants who settled in the Delaware Bay area, USA in the 17th Century. Other historians have said log cabins originated from Scandinavia and Russia.

Regardless of their origins, the log cabin remains as popular as ever and like most things in today’s world they are filled with modern technology. They are far removed from our colonial predecessors who had log cabins made from a basic design of interlocking logs with the chinks (gaps) filled with stones, moss and dung.

Once the decision has been made to have a log cabin, no matter what size, there are plenty of additional choices to be made. Such as: do you need planning permission? Contact your Local Authority who will inform you what steps to take. Where do you site the log cabin? A local surveyor can give you advice about the cabin’s location and what sort of foundations you will need.

Once you’ve been given the go ahead for your cabin, you need to decide on your budget so you’ll know if you can afford a handcrafted or a manufactured log cabin. The choice is yours as to where you want to purchase your log cabin: local companies who specialise in log cabins, large DIY stores selling log cabin kits and the internet, which provides a wide range of choice and information about log cabins.

If you don’t mind how much money you spend, a handcrafted log cabin may be your choice. Skilled craftsmen build the log cabin to your exact specifications and each log is shaped and custom-fitted for your cabin. For a cheaper version, you could buy a modular or manufactured log cabin – in other words a DIY kit. They start from as little as £1000 for a basic design to over £13,000 for a cabin with rooms inside, double doors and a veranda surrounded by a fence. The modular log cabins are made of uniform milled logs that come numbered and packaged with the doors and windows pre-hung. These kits are classed as ‘easy-to-assemble.’ However if you struggle to put together even a small size flat-pack of furniture, you might consider hiring a carpenter to assemble the cabin! This will save you a lot of time and stress and will still be cheaper than having a handcrafted log cabin.

The traditional choice of wood for a log cabin is pine, spruce, fir or cedar. Cedar is the most expensive option, but unlike pine, cedar has natural preservatives that help make it resistant to rot, decay and insect damage.

A project plan should be kept and include all aspects of your log cabin construction: delivery dates and costs, land survey results and costs, installation of services such as plumbing, electricity, gas, telephone lines and all furnishings. This will help you keep track with your log cabin construction and budget.

Many people enjoy the ‘rustic’ charm of a log cabin and they can make a wonderful addition for your home. Proper siting, construction and maintenance of your log cabin can protect your investment and give you and your family many years of enjoyment.

When people think of log cabins, they often associate them with Pioneering America and in their popular role in the United Kingdom, as a garden building that can be converted into anything a family may need, such as a guest room, an office, or a gym.

But there is more to the log cabin than you would expect. In Russia, there is the world’s tallest ‘log cabin’ that used to be home to gangsters and their molls. In Canada, there is the world’s largest ‘log cabin’ that is a luxury hotel and has played host to Prime Ministers, General Governors, Royalty, and actors.

The world’s tallest log cabin is in Arkhangelsk, a town in Russia. It looks like it was designed and built by a bunch of toddlers as it stretches higgledy-piggledy towards the sky, but it was in fact designed and built by a rich Russian gangster called Sutyagin. He started to build his log cabin in 1992 and his intention was to build a two-story log cabin. However, after a visit to Japan and Norway, he decided he needed to utilise the roof space as they had done in their house designs. So he added another floor, and another floor, and another…..until he had added a total of 13 floors reaching 144ft! His skyscraper log cabin was initially home to his girlfriends, 18 chief executives of his construction company, their various molls, and himself. But times have changed and Sutyagin is virtually penniless after his third prison sentence. Consequently, his folly of a log cabin has fallen into disrepair and only his wife and he live in four rooms on the ground floor of the log cabin.

The world’s largest log cabin is in Montebello, Quebec, Canada. It is called Château Montebello, and it is a magnificent log cabin built in 1930 by an army of 3000 labourers. It was made from 10,000 logs, 500,000 hand-slit cedar roof shakes, and 166 kilometres of wooden moulding. The log cabin was originally a private club and had 186 guest rooms contained in four wings that fanned from a hexagonal rotunda, with two additional wings for the dining room and the ballroom. The rotunda contained a six-sided fireplace that rose more than 20 metres to the roof! In 1970, Canadian Pacific Hotels bought Château Montebello and converted it from a private club into a luxury resort opened to the public. In 1981, Château Montebello hosted the G7 economic summit meeting and their leaders such as Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Pierre Trudeau. Today it is still a wonderful ‘log cabin’ for guests and visitors.

The world’s tallest and widest log cabins are unique wonders, and you could create your own unique and eye-catching log cabin for your garden, although maybe not on such a grand scale! For example, you could have a double level cabin with a circular staircase up to a loft bedroom, an L-shaped log cabin with a covered porch or a hexagonal shaped log cabin surrounded by a veranda. Your log cabin could have garden decking that links the log cabin to your house, and lined with pots filled with country garden flowers that bring a profusion of colour and perfume to the whole area. Outdoor window boxes would allow flowers to bring colour to every corner of your log cabin. Fitted bay windows would create extra space inside your log cabin and help to give it a unique shape and outside window shutters would add character and privacy to your log cabin.

Let your imagination flow, and take your ideas to a log cabin company that can help you create your own unique and distinctive log cabin.

Log cabins UK are dream homes for many people living in rural and urban areas. They are a nice combination of elegance and art. These log cabins are made of wood and offer natural environment to stay healthy. There is a common belief that log cabin homes are always found in woody forest areas for leisure retreats. But, the truth is, they are actually used as primary residence of the log home owners. This is the reason why they are found in and around many metropolitan areas. Log cabins UK are designed with wood to create a natural exceptional appeal.

Now, if you are looking for the homes for a nice holiday, log cabins UK would make a best option. They are comfortable and long-lasting. They can be found with different specifications and options. They are easy to build and easy to maintain, therefore their maintenance cost is comparatively lower than any other house types. But, before you plunge into buying a log cabin house, you must be aware of the online retailers available in the existing UK housing market. This is because, you may come across some online retailers that do not possess good knowledge about the log cabins and can make you deal with a bad stuff.

If you are planning for log cabins UK or Finn forest log cabin, it is important to buy a log home that can provide you numerous options to better suit your personal requirements. Therefore, approaching a right dealer can help you select log cabins that offer ultimate flexibility at cheaper prices. Buying a log home from an experienced hand will get you a comfortable home that you will enjoy forever. There are some retailers that usually charge more for the products, so it is better to avoid inexperienced ones, if you want to completely utilize the housing opportunity. Also, the experienced retailers will help you originally construct log cabins, be it Finn forest log cabin or any other kind with more developed construction and designing techniques to create your own dream place.

The UK log cabin market has experienced many dramatic shifts and moves because of the online retailers who do not know how to sell their products and as a result drop in shipping. Hence, it has become important for the customers to look for the retailers that can offer them better quality log cabins. With little of your research you will be able to reach the right dealer or manufacturer to meet your expectations. You can even look for English manufacturers, offering luxurious log cabins. Many cabin manufacturers have grown more conscious of the quality of the log cabins because of increasing consumer expectations. They are improving their products to keep going with the latest trends. It’s still true that many log cabin manufactures have no knowledge of what they are selling; still there are retailers or manufacturers that are becoming wiser by providing higher quality log cabins UK or Finn forest log cabin to increase their sales and decrease customer service issues.
