I am planning on replacing he brick on my house with new siding. What do I do about the brick shelf?

Basically I plan to replace the brick on my house with siding. How do I handle the brick shelf? Without furring out the siding with 1 x wood the siding will finish at the brick shelf and the water will not run off properly. What the best way to handle this?
