Hi,my rat Oliver ^^ is acting kind of funny,
When he walks he kins leans to the side and his head is kind of crooked, and when he stands up on his hind legs to greet me at the cage door sometimes he kind of falls over, and when he drinks out of his water bottle he turns his head all the way around until he is drinking upside down sometimes.I have a very large cage for him and he has 2 other buddies Noah and Dakota,so he isn’t lonely or depressed,I also feed them Martin(i think) Rat lab block’s and he loves them,i know what foods not to feed rats as I had pet rats before. And i do NOT use pine and ceder shavings i use sent free care fresh bedding! Can the problems with him continue to worsen when he is older? He is only about 2 months old so he is still a baby and he can fit in the pom of your hand.He is very curious and loves to play..ALOT I am just worried about him and ,yes i still plan to keep him even if his problems worsen.
Please no rude comments or nasty things please,
And can you please write the answer yourself instead of copying and pasting of of websites?
BTW I’m 15
Sorry if i left out some information ,
did he have a stroke or something?
I hate to say it but he might have a tumor in his head (tumors cause rats heads to be tilted)…:( maybe you should take him to the vet…
Sounds like he has ‘head tilt’ caused by an infection of some type. Our rat just got over an ear infection & she had these same symptoms.
You need to get him to the vet as soon as possible so that you can get treatment started. Rats go down hill quickly when they get sick so don’t wait.
sounds like your lil squishy has an inner ear infection thats throwing him off balance. you need to take him to the vet since there’s nothing out on the market that can fix this. if left untreated this can get much worse and put him in a lot of pain
well it is problem a barth defect or is the runt of the litter if it the runt don’t worry or if it is a birth defect then Take him to the doc
and good luck with ur rats
Im pretty sure your rat had a stroke … my hamster started acting like that and she was pretty old it’ was really sad
she died 3 weeks later
It sounds like your rat has Wry Neck- which is relatively common, but not good.
Im trying to look up possible causes, but the main one that is coming us is mycoplasma- which is a common condition in rats.
It affects their respitory tract, often leading to sneezing, wheezing, and porphryn discharge around the eyes and nose- in extreme cases, it can cause wry neck.
If your rattie is only 2 months old, and he has symptoms this severe- he is very sick. He really needs to see a vet. This disease is highly contageous in rats, and he can easily spread the problem to his brothers.
He really needs to be on antibiotics to help slow down the illness, and it wouldnt hurt to get your other ratties checked out to make sure that they are not sick.
Once you have a diagnosis, you should not have to go back to the vet for further consultations- you can just get his meds.
I love the name ‘Oliver’ btw- I used to have a mouse named ‘Dodger’ so when I got my first rats I named them Fagin and Bill.

That might mean a tumor in his brain. But, there’s also a likely chance of an ear infection, which can be cured. Please see a vet.
Yeah it could be. It could also maybe be an inner ear infection.
I’m not sure, but take him to a vet ASAP!
