Hi, I’m looking into purchasing an 1800 sq ft home (2 stories). The house has damaged siding (the paint appears to be bubbling off) and it turns out that the siding contains asbestos. Approximately how much would it cost to replace this siding ($3,000, $30,000?? any range would be helpful)? Also, what type of siding would you suggest I replace it with?
Thanks in advance!
Price ranges can vary….get a few quotes from local companies and I would also suggest adding some insulating foam board to an older house to increase R-value. 3/4 or 1 inch before vinyl siding…..tape all seams to act as a moisture barrier. Window and door frames may have to be extended as well. Might run several thousand all told. The biggest challenge will be the asbestos siding removal…in many areas it’s illegal to dispose of it improperly and it must be removed by certified personnel…check local laws and contractors that do this.
I would ask a pro. Asbestos is fine as long as it’s not disturbed. It may be possible to side over it with no danger.
Remember, Asbestos is a very dangerous material. Dust particles of asbestos are easily inhaled or swallowed and cause various diseases including asbestosis, a chronic lung disease; mesothelioma, cancer of the lining of lungs, chest and stomach and other deadly diseases.
