It dents easy, never paint it in flat, a satin paint will hold up longer. The way the prices are for scrap metal you could buy the house remove the old metal and scrap it out and the money you get from the scrap should be enough to pay for the material for vinyl siding.

My parents had the Vinyl siding put on their house around 30 years ago (my Dad gave the guy his boat (an 18 footer and motor) plus cash. It was a deal my Dad got rid of the boat and my Mom got the exterior done on the house and 1/2 of the garage back.

They passed 9 and 10 years ago, the house was sold and I still see it frequently and it still has the same white siding and looks fine.

So I would say it has held up fine, but in Florida we RARELY ever have hail. Just check on the company that installed it for quality.

I have a 24 year old aluminum siding home. The siding has a wood embossed pattern on it where the dirt gets caught. We did not know to have the house power washed more often then we did. It does stain over the years if you do not keep up with the power washing. We live in Southern New Jersey in a very wooded area so we have lots of pollen and sap to deal with. The secret to keeping anything clean is to keep it clean. I hope this helps.

rust, paint/coating failure, and poor flashing are common on poorly done metal siding.

Make sure you find out if its quality work or not

The first thing that comes to mind... beware hail storms.
Can you say 'ding!'
After that, well, its durable, withstands <nearly> everything. But, when it gets, uh, bent.... its bent.
Ask how long it has been on the house, and if there are any warranties on it.
If panels are easily replaced, go for it!

Ask about the possibility of it conducting electricity, as in lightning etc. My husband worked for a company that made vinyl siding and it was far preferable. Also, if you've got kids, the metal stuff dents fairly easily.

The finish on the siding will oxidize and will have to be repainted. A good paint job should last 10 years.
